Route 66

Route 66 is more than a road—it's a piece of living history that winds its way through eight states, capturing the great spirit of the American road trip along the way. Throughout the years, millions of travelers have stopped at its unusual shops, hotels and scenic landmarks searching for a better life... or just a great time. There's no other route in the U.S. that illustrates the scenery of our country and the American vacation experience more vividly. Yet with the introduction of interstates and the popularity of air travel, its lights, landmarks and history have begun to fade.

In April 2003, Hampton embarked on a journey to help save Route 66. Our volunteers hit the road for a 66-day road trip across all eight states of Route 66. Jim Conkle, national preservationist and historian, led the Hampton Route 66 Caravan™ pier to pier from Santa Monica to Chicago.

Deemed the Route's single largest recognition trip in history, the journey included landmark refurbishments, "Roadside Attraction" sign postings, festivals, parades, and more, and it also created the first unofficial travel guide to teach Route 66 travelers its real history.
